Preparing your home for a wood floor installation

What to do before the fitters arrive: acclimatising the floor, clearing rooms, skirting boards, doors and what to expect on the day.

Before we arrive

Clear the rooms of furniture if you can, or we can move it for an agreed charge. Let us know about anything fragile or heavy. If you're having other work done, flooring is best fitted after plastering and painting but before the final coat on skirtings.

Acclimatising the wood

Boxes of flooring should sit in the room where they'll be fitted for a few days with the heating on at normal living levels. This lets the timber settle to your home's humidity and avoids gaps later.

Doors, skirting and thresholds

New flooring is usually thicker than carpet, so doors may need trimming — we can do this. Skirting can be removed and refitted over the new floor, or left in place with scotia to cover the expansion gap. We'll agree the approach with you in the quote.

On the day

We'll protect your hallway and other floors, keep dust to a minimum and tidy at the end of each day. Glued floors need to be left for the adhesive to cure before heavy use — usually overnight.

Questions

Should flooring be fitted before or after the kitchen?
For a glued-down floor we usually fit before the kitchen units so the floor runs under them and the units sit level. Floating floors are often fitted around the units. We'll advise for your project.
